Sister Golden Hair

The question people most often ask me about living in Lithuania is whether or not I miss Ireland. My answer is always the same – it’s not so much Ireland that I miss, but my family and friends. There are other things I miss occasionally, like the music and craic in a good Irish pub or living near the sea and the abundance of fish & seafood that the sea provides. But mostly it’s my friends and family that I miss.

As it happens, I still had the same problem when I lived in Ireland because my sister (my only sibling) and her family live in Australia. Back when I had a good job I would take a month off work every other year and travel to Australia to see them. Given that they usually came to Ireland in the in-between years it was never too long between get-togethers.

Now that I also live abroad, coordinating visits is more complicated. We met up in Ireland last September and she’s talking about going home again next summer. With small kids growing up at a rate of knots that’s just two damn long between meet-ups. So, budgeting and frugal lifestyle be damned, I’m going to Australia.

This time next week I will be in the air, winging my way across continents and oceans to see my big sister. I’m really looking forward to the trip. I’ve been to Australia a number of times before so I won’t be doing much of the touristy stuff. I will, however, be heading up the Blue Mountains to a homestead to go horse riding with the kids – something I’m seriously excited about. I am also looking forward to lots and lots of fish and seafood and Weekly Photo Challenge, lively markets. I’ll take lots of photos and tell you all about it when I get home.

The title is a nickname I have for my sister which I took from the song by America.

    • It ain’t my forte, Julie, but I look forward to giving it a try! I got thrown as a kid and broke an arm and later I had serious back problems that prevented horse riding. I’m strong now, though, so I should be ok!

  5. Have a fabulous break with your family June. Wish my own sis & her brood lived closer but at least they are bit nearer than Oz. Enjoy!

  8. Sister golden hair here…. can’t wait! In exchange for fresh fish for dinner every night, my skin (and blister) will be helping me manage 3 feral kids and organise my pantry and my paperwork. God love her! I too am super-excited about seeing a clan member – especially this particular clan member – down under.

    • I’m just going for 2 weeks, Susan – there’s too much going on here to be gone for longer. We’ll definitely have to meet up when I get back,

    • Arūnas is staying home – unfortunately the ole self-sufficient budget doesn’t cover two tickets. He’ll be sure to keep Casanova in his place!
