What a joy it is, a vegetable grower’s delight. Take some seeds, put them in the earth, tend to them, nurture them; watch empty spaces become dots of green, watch tiny leaves unfurl and grow, watch flowers, heads, roots and fruits emerge. It’s August and my bones are tired from weeding and watering, but the beauty of the ground beneath my feet makes it all worthwhile.

    Nice garden and your pictures are lovely. We have a garden too and I have made and frozen a lot of tomato sauce this year. We have butternut squash in our garden for the first time and it is so much better than what we get in the store. It is also a hardy plant.

    • Thanks Sue. Squash is such a good plant to grow – it just seems to grow like wildfire for me. Delighted to hear your tomatoes came in well for you. It was my first year growing them and I was so happy with how they turned out.

    • I’m not sure! There are holes in some of my cabbages but for some reason they didn’t touch any of the curly stuff!

      • you are just that good! watch out for next year, though. if i do cole crops again, i will probably use row covers. It’s so discouraging to see them grow beautifully, then be decimated by bugs – almost overnight!

      • I’m not sure what happened but I seem to have had one of those infestations since I took the photos. I now have both black fly and a ton of caterpillars. I picked off all the caterpillars this evening and sprayed with garlic-chilli spray for the black fly. Here’s hoping I can keep them in one piece until I can harvest them. You’re so right – it’s so frustrating to see your hard work pulled apart in no time.

      • Oh – and they still didn’t touch any of the curly stuff – only the white cabbage, broccoli leaves, Brussels sprouts leaves and cauliflower leaves. Funny.

      • Sorry – we call cabbages that have knobbly leaves (as opposed to smooth leaves) curly. From my garden that includes curly kale (not pictured) and the savoy cabbage that’s in the cover photo. The bugs seem to prefer the smooth leaves – it’s probably easier for them to cling onto.

    • I’ve actually never had them fried, although I’ve heard they’re delicious that way. Unfortunately I don’t have a fryer at the moment. But I’m still enjoying eating them!
