Wasting Time

I can’t believe it took until my early 40s to realise that we sleep for about one third of our lives. When this first dawned on me I was horrified – what a waste of time! I’ve been asleep for over 13 years – think of all I could have done with that time! But then I thought about how much I love my sleep. I love where my head takes me (most of the time) when I’m asleep. And I love the rejuvenation and reenergising that happens while we sleep. I awake refreshed and restored, ready to go again. Really not time wasted.

I’m not good at wasting time, you see. I like to be busy. I like to have a plan. There’s so much to see and do, so much to achieve – there’s no time for sitting around! I’ve been going hell for leather since the start of May, when I started work outside in the garden. The first vegetables were processed in early June and there’s been a continuous stream of veg since the beginning of July.

I’ve been dealing with weeds and bugs and fungi and rodents and various other hindrances. I’ve been trying to harvest fruit and vegetables in their prime, filling my freezers, making wine and cooking delicious meals. In between all this I’ve been making the most of nature’s bounty and collecting as many wild mushrooms as possible, eating some but drying most for winter use. There was no time for blogging and hardly any time to take photos to share later. The days simply weren’t long enough to get everything done – there was no time to be wasted.

Today is a little different, though. Today is my wedding anniversary. Nine years ago I said “I do” to the man of my dreams. Nine years later I still love him just as much. More, in fact. So today I’m going to waste a little time with my husband. Where’s the crime in that?

  1. Happy Anniversary! It sounds like you took some much needed time for yourselves. I feel the same way you do, no time to waste, there is so much I want to do. It seems every day flies by, what is a girl to do?

    • Yep, sometimes you just need to make yourself take a timeout or nature will eventually force you into it! 🙂

  3. Happy anniversary! Enjoy every moment of this well deserved break. And such an occasion could never be a waste of time. When one forgets such occasions or stop caring for them is when something is wasted 😀

    • I read a great quote yesterday that said once you get to a certain age you stop trying to seize the day and instead savour the day. Spot on! Not savouring these moments is, as you say, a waste. 🙂

  4. I loved this! I’m averse to wasting time too and find it hard to believe that I can have slept through so much of this life of opportunity but wasting time with your hubby is no waste but all gain. Happiest of happy days to you both this special day 💖
