Beauty In My Backyard

Rose Hips in Autumn | www.myfoododyssey.com

I’ve been sitting here quietly for so long even I’ve forgotten I’m here. I had dressed snugly for the cold October weather and warmth of the sun on my dark down coat is having a soporific effect. I’m awake but not fully aware as I gaze out from the high hide on the scene around me, patiently waiting for wildlife to appear.

There had been a few deer here when I arrived, but they bounded off into the forest when they heard me coming. An hour has passed since then and I’ve seen nothing but birds. A small flock of geese flew overhead, but unfortunately not close enough to take photos. Surely the deer must have forgotten about me by now? I do an occasional Crazy Ivan to check that the whole herd isn’t grazing contently behind me. They are not.

Late October is a great time for taking photos, especially here in the Lithuanian countryside, surrounded by forests and wildlife. The sun is low, reflecting beautifully off the golden leaves. Deer are grazing on the thick tufts of vegetation left after grass, rape and other crops are cut. I know they’re here, in the forest behind me. I wait and wait for them to appear. They do not come.

The sun has almost hit the tree line when I eventually admit defeat. I am determined to make use of this glorious light. I will just have to take photos of inanimate subjects for today. I head back to our small village in search of more willing participants. I will come back for the deer another day.

  4. June, I love the colours in your pictures! And have to say it gave me some serenity, when I after a very hectic day read your description of sitting there still and waiting for deer to come… peaceful.

    • Thanks Vilma. It actually was quite serene sitting there. I wasn’t bored at all, even though I was there over 1.5 hours. And I’ll happily do it again another day.

  7. What a lovely lovely set of pictures ((including the beauteous cow with her muzzle trailing grass and horns that make her look, for all the world like Heidi with her head hugging braids)). The colours are spectacular. Thank you for sharing such beauty 😊

    • Ha! She does look like she has braids, or maybe a daisy-chain crown! I was very happy she “posed” so nicely for me after being thwarted by the deer!
