Somehow, in the chaos that was the last few weeks (which I will tell you about anon), I completely forgot to tell you that one of my photos won Photo of the Year at the recent BlogHer annual conference. I was completely blown away when I heard the news. Who, me? (Looks over shoulder for the “real” photographer.) I won the “Nature Big and Small” category with a photo taken on Mont Blanc last summer.
Rather than repeat the photo here (you can see it in the video below) I thought I would instead give some context to the photo. These photos were taken in Chamonix, France in July of last summer. The temperatures at sea level were quite warm – in the low 20s, I think. Temperatures on the mountain were just below freezing – perfect if you’re one of the crazy people who actually wants to climb Mont Blanc. Many people take the cable car to the top of Aiguille du Midi, 3842 m above sea level, and start their ascent to the top of Mont Blanc (4810 m) from there. Some camp overnight at Aiguille du Midi, ready to start at first light the next morning. Other climbers prefer to take on the (very slightly!) less arduous climb of Aiguille du Midi itself and can be seen arriving at the top in the photos below.
I consider myself to be quite an adventurous person but I can safely say that climbing a snowy mountain is not on my bucket list.

Oh, wow, well done. Love the new look to the blog too. Sorry if it’s been up for a while – there’s a certain irony in the fact that I don’t have time to write or read blog posts when running a blog awards!! 😉 Nearly there though!
