Abstract

Man Holding Tree Carving, Lithuania | www.myfoododyssey.com

Forests fascinate me. In the fairy tales of my childhood, wonderful and exciting things always happened in the woods. That’s where the witch had her hut, hidden amongst the dense trees. That’s where the animals came alive at night. That’s where the trees could talk and, if pushed to it by some evil force, even move about from place to place.

Lithuania is covered in with forests, many of which have designated areas for walking and picnicking. On a recent walk we spotted some beautiful wood carvings. I particularly liked this man holding up a tree. I imagined that he was mid-task when the morning light froze him, and that he would begin his work again at twilight.

    Wow! Such a discovery.

Your photos remind me of our visit to Witches’ Hill on the Curonian Spit in Summer 2014. Have you been there?

    • Thanks Frances. For shame I haven’t been down the Spit yet. I made it to the beach and aquarium across from Klaipeda but I haven’t been further south yet. We have visitors from Ireland coming this summer, though, and a day-trip down the Spit is part of the plan!

How neat to find carvings like that along walks. I love to walk with my kids and find bugs, interesting flowers or spiders. To find something like this carving would be a real find! Thanks for sharing.
