Food Word of the Day: Quahog

Food Word of the Day: Quahog | www.myfoododyssey.com

I’ve never eaten one of these, but I love cockles, mussels and all other bivalves that I’ve tried. I believe these are now being farmed in Europe – I must keep an eye out for them. In the meantime, I’ll just enjoy the sound of the word.

    We used to live on the East Coast of the US (NYC) and went up to Rhode Island. That was where I first had stuffed quahog. They take the meat and dice it up and add all sorts of yummy things (sausage, bread, spices) and butter and then finish it off in the oven. Totally delicious. Now I live on the other side of North America – Vancouver Island – and I can’t get “stuffies” anymore.

      Those sound delicious, Hilary! I know what it’s like to miss foods. Lithuania has a very short coastline and I miss thinks like mussels and fresh prawns that are readily available in Ireland.

    People here in the States may actually know this word because it’s the name of the town in the TV show Family Guy. It’s supposed to be in New England, and there is a bar called The Drunken Clam 😀

    In New England we call them “Co-Hogs”. They can be the size of the palm of your hand and are often found just beneath the sand in the water along the shoreline. If you just shuffle along with your feet, you can find enough for dinner. They are firm like mussels, not slimey like oysters. And the chowder is the best in the world!

      Oh, Suzana – you’re making my mouth water! I love seafood and chowder. We used to collect mussels on a beach not too far from our house when we were kids. So delicious!
